A Stroll Through History: Madrid's Architecture from the Renaissance to the Baroque

November 26, 2024

Royal Palace of Madrid

The Royal Palace of Madrid is one of the great Baroque landmarks in the city, a site that impresses both for its majesty and the sheer wealth of details. Its imposing façade and interior decorated with exquisite luxury reflect the grandeur of a golden age for the Spanish monarchy. With more than 3,000 rooms, its spacious halls, gardens, and courtyards invite you to journey back in time, exploring the history, art, and architecture of one of Europe's most spectacular buildings. If you would like to visit it, it's only an 11-minute walk from our apartments.

Monastery of El Escorial

We continue with the Monastery of El Escorial, located 1 hour and 20 minutes by public transport from Gran View Apartments, a place of breathtaking beauty that fuses Renaissance and Herrerian styles. This complex is much more than a monastery: it is a true architectural masterpiece. Its façade, reflecting the spirit of the Renaissance, gives way to an interior that houses a royal palace, a church, a library and much more.

Church of San Antonio de los Alemanes

The Church of San Antonio de los Alemanes (St Anthony of the Germans) is one of those hidden spots that often go unnoticed but which, when discovered, captivate you completely. Located in the heart of Madrid, this church is a prime example of the Baroque style. Its interior transports you to an era of artistic and religious splendour. It was designed by the architect Francisco de Moradillo, and although it is small, its detail and ornamentation make it a unique hidden treasure. You can get there on foot in just 5 minutes from our apartments.

Plaza Mayor (Main Square)

Madrid's Plaza Mayor, only a 9-minute walk from our apartments, is one of the city's most emblematic landmarks. Its architecture, influenced by the Renaissance and Baroque styles, is characterised by arches that invite you to take a stroll. Today, it is still the centre of many events and celebrations, but it is the architecture, which has stood the test of time, that remains one of the main attractions for visitors seeking to discover the essence of the most classic aspects of Madrid.

Convento de las Carboneras
Although many of the Renaissance and Baroque buildings in Madrid share a distinct style, the Convento de las Carboneras (Convent of Las Carboneras) is an example of the two styles merging in a fascinating way. Its baroque façade instantly attracts the eye, but when you enter, you will discover Renaissance details that add to its unique character.
